MAGAZINE / POSTER
INCEPTION
The trailer for the movie Inception informs the audience of the plot and introduces main character Leonaro DiCaprio. This is also shown in the magazine cover of the film whereby the main character's image is the centre of the poster indicating he plays a leading role and is an important character. He also holds the weapon in his hand which he also uses in the film trailer. This indicates that one of the genres is action. Also the colours that are portrayed in all three texts are similar in that they have a main theme of red, blue and grey. This gives the audience a feel of the atmosphere inviting them to watch Inception as a mysterious and gloomy film. The way that the texts are layed out clearly calls out to all Leonardo DiCaprio fans as he is the main character of the film and the audience can clearly see this by the fact that he is center to all texts. Even in the poster where the background image is bigger than them. DiCaprio is still centre and forward holding the weapon and his name is used as the coverline in the poster which the audience will be able to recognise instantly.
So this was an example of a random genre to research in how trailers link with the poster, so now we have an idea of what we need to consider when doing our poster and how we are going to do this, linking our trailer with the poster and magazine. |

HORROR RESEARCH - POSTER
Here we have looked at horror movie posters and analysed each poster to gain an idea of how we would like our poster to go by, to follow horror conventions of the poster.
FIRST ATTEMPT OF POSTER:Here is the first attempt to our poster, we had gone for an A4 sized poster and tried to go for a similar grudge image from inspiration of 'The Grudge'.
We have tried to go for the 3 colours scheme of RED, WHITE and BLACK... as these are the three main colours on horror posters. The title is in RED and emphasised, as it is the title and using the image of Scarlett herself- as she is the main character. We have put ratings from different magazines/Film distributors as certain posters contain this. We have also put the credits at the bottom of the poster as this is on most film posters. |
FINAL POSTER:This is our final film poster. I took the lead in creating this although I have also helped to input ideas too. We used Adobe Photoshop to do this. It is very different from the first poster in that it is now landscape. This can be seen as beneficial as it can be displayed on billboards, small buses etc. This poster also includes the names of the main actors 'NATASHA BEGHI' & 'RIA SHARMA' so the audience can clearly recognise the actors and again, this may attract a wider audience. The use of the eye in this poster also makes adds realism to the film because we want the audience to be able to believe it is true.
I am proud of our poster and the hard work that has gone into it. Everytime we filmed we took pictures of what the main character (that is me), wore. We used different camera angles too. We then discussed the best pictures which would fit the horror genre and that would look attractive to an audience. We also kept in the mind the creativity of the picture and how we could adapt this picture to suit the poster whilst conveying messages to the target audience. |
As our film is similar to that off these trailers we have based our posters on similar concepts. The film 'The Grudge' has one image with a hidden identity of the main character which is similar to the main character in our film called 'SCARRED' therefore we have taken still images inspired from 'The Grudge'

MAGAZINE RESEARCH:
Magazine covers follow typical conventions such as a big title of the name of the magazine i.e EMPIRE or GQ, a large image to attract readers, date, price, other features inside the magazine and so on.
herefore we also wanted to follow these comventions adapting this to 'SCARRED' To do this we had to firstly decide what type of magazine we wanted to chosen our film to go on to. This is where we have conducted research in looking at different types of magazine covers such as Empire. Total Film, GQ and so on.
We decided to go for a film magazine in which we would make our own magazine company. This gave us a challange but one that would make our film stand out from many others. This invites new readers, new audiences to read it as it would one, appeal to our target audience yet also
attract other readers s they may notice it is new. Furthermore, we would be able to follow the conventions of a magazine poster but also create and add our own style.
From the research, it was evident that the main character is usually the main attraction to readers as they want to know all about them. Therefore, we decided to use the main star to be the big attracttion to our readers.

HORROR MAGAZINES:
We had looked at certain Horror magazines and tried to understand the conventions of horror magazines, below are the magazines we had looked at and in doing so we have decided to design and make our own magazine. We had compared horror magazines, and realised most of the magazines have all of their content on the left hand side, we also had compared the magazines to normal movie magazines and gained an idea from both different magazines.
We have taken many pictures of the main character in the costume she had worn in the film trailer. We contemplated whether to do this or
not by dressing the main star in formal wear such as a dress to attract readers. After considering the pros and cons of doing this, we finally ame to a conclusion that we should use images of the main character wearing a costume from the film trailer. Not only does it attract readers but it would give them a chance to look at the state of the character and compare and contrast it to our poster which shows a different side of Scarlett's character. |
We have decided to use this as the main image of for the magazine cover. This picture shows Scarlett, yet also shows Natasha Beghi and
the readers will be able to indenify it is her. Here, the readers can see her in her character but also see her as an actor. The background of the picutre is a graveyard which is one of the scenes from the trailer. The readers will be able to grasp a cold atmosphere. The trees on the trees also emphasise nature. This may give the audience an idea that she is her own nature - in a graveyard. The costume is also black which Scarlett wears in the trailer repeatedly. This compares with our poster and trailer too so people will be able to indenitfy this.
MAGAZINE TITLE:
We have called our magazine name 'INSOMNIA' This gives the impression that our readers will not be able to put the magazine down and go
to slee because they want to continue reading. Our film title is big, bold and red. The colour of the font is used to portray the genre of the film. Following the typical conventions of a poster, we are including a film strip of other films which contain a similar genre or fit into the magazine we are conveying. |
RESEARCH:
Above we had looked at horror magazines and tried to gain knowledge and more conventions of a horror magazine, we realised that majority of the information is always on the left hand side instead of all over the front cover.
there wasn't an obvious, popular horror magazine- so decided to make our own magazine using conventions of a horror magazine and a normal film magazine combined, in doing so we are using both elements of each and making it our own and being able do use and do what we want to do- using our own ideas.

FIRST ATTEMPT:
This was the first attempt to our poster, we had chosen an image we had taken onset and in choosing this image we decided that magazines always have the main character on the cover and the main character is always key. We wanted to gain an
|
SECOND ATTEMPT:This is the second attempt from the last, as you can see we had changed the font as ms patel gave us feedback that the font from perviously was too amateur.
So from the feedback we had chose the grey colour scheme and also added more writing to make the page look busy. |
THIRD ATTEMPT:This is the third attempt to the magazine, We have changed the colour of red to a very dark 'bloody' red to match the
horror genre. It also clearly stands out. There are many features around the main image which also clearly stand out. We have used a colour theme of white and red. Although Scarred is the main feature of this months issue of INSOMNIA, there are also other films which are being featured in the magazine. These films fit in with the genre of thriller/horrors and also fit in with the ethos of INSOMNIA. Even though we all agreed that it was a good magazine poster, and our audience also agreed, some did not. Therefore we changed the image of the magazine poster. |
FOURTH ATTEMPT:The audience feedback we have received from people such as fellow media students
of our class and our media studies teacher, Mr Goddard had said that they do not feel the the above magazine poster portrayed the horror genre well enough. Even though we liked it we and had our reasons for why we had chosen this particular image i.e the mis-en-scene: lighting, colours etc., we had to take into consideration the opinions of others and learn from it. This image looked slightly better in terms of representing the horror genre however, did not look effective. The box in the image also looks 'out of place' and does not look professional. |
FINAL MAGAZINE:
After careful consideration we have decided to go with this magazine cover, from changing the image and going through a lot of different changes from the other magazines and improving massively- this is the final magazine cover we have decided to go with, taking in consideration of all conventions of the magazine.
This picture is bold, effective and portrays Scarlett's character. The audience feedback we had received about this image was positive. The image is centred and the background is black implying a dark atmosphere. The facial expression is still and emotionless just like Scarlett.
